CUTC AWARD BANQUET This year's Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) annual award banquet, which honors students and faculty across the transportation fi eld and continually works to advance modes and disciplines of transportation, was held on Jan. 6 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in D.C. Over 50 awards were presented at this year's banquet, including Student of the Year, New Faculty, and Lifetime Achievement Awards. Two PacTrans students; Kayla Fleskes from OSU and Regan Hansen from UI; each received an Outstanding Student of the Year Award. UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO'S CLEAN SNOWMOBILE TEAM TAKES HOME THE GOLD (FOUR TIMES)! Early last March, University of Idaho's Clean Snowmobile Team participated in the SAE International Clean Snowmobile Challenge (CSC) at Michigan Technological University, from which they brought home a number of awards for their innovative designs. The SAE International CSC is an engineering and design competition that challenges college and university students to reinvent and modify existing snowmobiles, which are then judged based on a variety of sustainable categories regarding emissions and fuel economy, as well as more design and function based classifi cations, like acceleration and handling. This year's challenge, hosted by the Keweenaw Research Center and the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics, featured the use of snowmobiles powered by either a special gasoline or a diesel mix. In the gasoline categories, UI's team was rewarded for best acceleration, best handling, best value, and CAN- DO-E-Controls. Furthermore, the team was able to successfully complete the endurance run. PacTrans Fall Regional Transportation Seminar Presents: Sherif Ishak The PacTrans autumn quarter regional transportation seminar was conducted by Dr. Sherif Ishak, Professor and Department Chair of Civil Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His seminar, titled Developing a Crash Risk Index and Detecting Driver's Engagement in Secondary Tasks from Driving Behavior Attributes and Socioeconomic Characteristics: A Naturalistic Driving Study, explored models developed for each of three selected secondary tasks: calling, texting, and passenger interaction while studying fi ve separate performance attributes of driver behavior. PacTrans Winter Regional Transportation Seminar Presents: David Noyce The PacTrans winter quarter regional transportation seminar was conducted by Dr. David Noyce, Arthur F. Hawnn Professor of Transportation Engineering and Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW-Madison). His seminar, titled Developing Communication- and Connectivity-Driven Transportation Systems, explored the development of a software- based data collection system capable of monitoring and logging vehicle trajectories. PacTrans Spring Regional Transportation Seminar Presents: Lily Elefteriadou The PacTrans spring quarter regional transportation seminar was conducted by Dr. Ageliki Elefteriadou, Director of the UF Transportation Institute (UFTI) and the Kisinger Campo Professor of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida. Her seminar, titled Traffi c Signal Control with Connected and Autonomous Vehicles in the Traffi c Stream, explored on-going work to develop optimization algorithms, simulation tools, and sensor capabilities for enhancing traffi c signal control operations when the traffi c stream consists of connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and conventional vehicles.
