PACTRANS PI NAMED TRANSPORTATION CLUB OF SEATTLE PERSON OF THE YEAR Last February, PacTrans PI, Anne Goodchild, was named the Transportation Club of Seattle's (TCS) 2017 Person of the Year. The non-profit, based in Seattle, is the center of the area's transportation community. It focuses on the study of transportation issues, promotes the welfare of its membership, and sponsors education programs, in addition to the development of close business relationships. Their Person of the Year Award recognizes those who have made extraordinary efforts, impact, and contributions to the local transportation field and community. Last year, Goodchild was responsible for launching the Urban Freight Lab, a partnership between private companies and public-sector agencies working with the City of Seattle to address urban delivery issues. Her research is focused on the intersection between supply chain management and freight transportation and, recently, she has been involved in evaluating change in the nature of e-commerce and implications for goods delivery on CO2 emissions, local pollutants, and vehicle miles traveled. PACTRANS 2017 REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION CONFERENCE ATTRACTS RECORD TURNOUT This year, PacTrans saw a record turnout of 250 attendees at the 5th annual Regional Transportation Conference, held on Friday, October 6, 2017 at UW's North Ballroom in the Husky Union Building. The theme was "Data-Driven Mobility Solutions for the PNW", with a focus on improving the mobility of people and goods in the Pacific Northwest. Items covered included recently completed research regarding new methods of proactively accessing landslide/rockfall risk, transportation big data and analytics, and DSRC Safety Implication with regard to potential security risks. Technology transfer and workforce development were also discussed. The conference concluded with a poster session featuring over 30 posters submitted by principal investigators and students, and an award presentation ceremony, during which PacTrans offered three awards. PACTRANS OSU PI NAMED GLENN WILLS HOLCOMB PROFESSOR IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING PacTrans PI and professor of structural engineering at Oregon State University, Michael Scott, was named the Glenn Wills Holcomb Professor in Structural Engineering early this year. The Professorship, established in 2011, is a recognition in honor of Glenn Holcomb, one of Edgerton's civil engineering teachers. Scott's research focuses on a number of topics in the transportation sector, including nonlinear structural analysis and dynamics, structural response sensitivity, object- oriented software design, parallel computing, and numerical methods. TWO PACTRANS PIS NAMED TO IDAHO AUTONOMOUS AND CONNECTED VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT COMMITTEE PacTrans Associate Director and Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Idaho, Ahmed Abdel-Rahim, and PacTrans PI and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Idaho, Axel Krings, were selected this year to be members of the technical advisory committee of the Idaho Autonomous and Connected Vehicle Deployment Committee. The executive committee was created after Idaho State Governor Butch Otter issued executive order NO. 2018-01.
