History Department Annual Awards UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS The Dr. Frances K. Millican Fund for Undergraduate Research Projects in History: Shadie Hijazi, Ashley Lindsey The Bicknell Fund for Academic Travel: Kayhan Nejad Wendi Lindquist will be an invited speaker at November 2013 symposium sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society on death in Oregon. Presentations will be published in a special issue of the Oregon Historical Quarterly on the history of death. Faye Wilson Scholarship for Undergraduate Tuition: Max Churaisin, Emily Fender, Sara Leonetti, Mayra Mendoza Allan Lumba has accepted a two-year Global American Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard University's Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History. Lois & Maurice Schwartz Fellowship for Non-Western History: Kelsey Hallahan, Kayhan Nejad, Indigo Trigg-Hauger Eleanor Mahoney was named a Publicly Active Graduate Fellow (PAGE) with the Imagining America Consortium for 2012-13. Sleizer Scholarship for Undergraduate Tuition: Maddie Boyd, Max Churaisin, Anna Fasano, Lucy Hereford, Stefanie Jackson, Sara Leonetti, Jim Maddock, Joseph Madsen, Kathleen Noll, Josie Rollins, Kelly Rovegno Deborah McNally was awarded the Aldon Duane Bell Award in Women's History in 2011-12. Freedman Remak Family Scholarship for Non-Resident Tuition: Cathleen Buzan, Jacqueline Wu Thomas Power Prize for History Research Papers: Ashley Lindsey (co-winner), Kathleen Noll (co-winner), Jim Maddock (runner-up) York-Mason Award for Research Projects About African Americans in the American West: Willie Brenc The Power Prize for Outstanding Graduating Senior: Aaron Smith (co-winner), Janelle White (co-winner) Pressly Prize for Excellence in Secondary Education: James Dyer Maria Quintana was a 2012-13 Simpson Center Society of Scholars fellow. She also received a 2013 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for her dissertation Be Our Guest (Worker): Making Meaning out of Race, Labor and Empire during the U.S. Emergency Labor Programs, 1942-1964. Shruti Patel received a Fritz & Boeing Graduate Fellowship for International Research & Study in winter 2013. In 2013-14, she will be a Simpson Center Society of Scholars fellow. Kayla Schott-Bresler won admission to the inaugural History of Capitalism Summer Workshop held at Cornell University in July 2013. GRADUATE PAPER PRIZES Thomas Power Prize for History Research Papers: Michael Aguirre (co-winner), Jesse Meredith (co-winner) GRADUATE STUDENT NEWS Anthony Adler received a Dissertation Improvement Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project, "The Ocean Laboratory." He also won the American Geophysical Union's annual prize for dissertations in the history of geophysics. Ross Cohen was named a Research Associate at the University of Alaska Museum and given a seat on the museum's Historical Collections Acquisition Committee. Mary Anne Henderson published an article reflecting on the history and politics of the recent fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas. It appeared in the Current, San Antonio's alternative newspaper. Stefan Kamola has accepted a three-year post-doc with the Princeton Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts. Roneva Keel was awarded a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship from the Southeast Asia Center of the Jackson School of International Studies to study Tagalog and pursue coursework in Southeast Asian area studies. Jessie Kindig was selected as the Alvord Fellow in the Humanities for 2013-14. She also received a Graduate School Presidential Dissertation Fellowship for 2013-14. history matters New Staff and Staff Promotions IN 2012, THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY welcomed two new staff members to its administrative team. Brendon Lee, Department Administrator, has worked at the University of Washington since 2000. His last position prior to joining History was with the School of Nursing, Office of the Dean, as their Business Manager. He is especially excited to join NEW DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATOR BRENDON LEE AND HIS DAUGHTER, the Department as he graduated from the UW as a History major. In addition to ADDISON. this new job, he is also a new dad to a daughter named Addison, born in 2012. Wanjiku Gitahi, History Department Administrative Coordinator, grew up mostly in Rhode Island and earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Smith College, before moving to Seattle to pursue a Masters of Social Work at UW. Prior to joining the Department, she worked in social services with at-risk and homeless youth and low-income adults. She has also worked in the Civil & Environmental Engineering and Astronomy departments at the UW. Matt Erickson, formerly Undergraduate Academic Advisor, has been promoted to Director of Academic Services. Department of History PAGE 9
