Husky Pride Shines at the 2012 Annual William C. Kloos Traffic Bowl The 21st Annual William C. Kloos Traffic Bowl Competition, hosted by Oregon ITE, was held in Portland in 2012. It provided valuable opportunities for transportation students in the Pacific NW to meet, discuss, compete, and socialize with other transportation engineering students and professionals. Proudly representing the University of Washington ITE, students Matt Dunlap, Sherry Kim, Yixiao Yin, and Xiaoyi Liu competed in the Traffic Bowl Jeopardy game and were awarded $400 for winning second place. WTS GALA IN SEATTLE The 2013 Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) Gala was held on March 19th at the Westin Hotel in downtown Seattle. Cathy Xiaoyue Liu, Ph.D. candidate at the University of Washington, received the Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship. Tingting Wang, Ph.D. candidate at the University of Washington, received the Senator Scott White Memorial Scholarship. From left: Tingting Wang, Mallory Wilde, Yingqian Mei, PacTrans assistant director Meghan MacKrell, Cathy Liu, Carmen Kwan, Sonia Xiao, Erica Miller, and UW Professor Cynthia Chen OSU HONORS STUDENTS CONDUCT RESEARCH ON DISTRACTED WALKING AND DRIVING Two Undergraduate Honors College (UHC) students at Oregon State University, Patrick Burns and Makenzie Ellett, are conducting UHC thesis projects that consider the influence of distractions on transportation user behavior. They are completing the work under the mentorship of Dr. David Hurwitz in the OSU Driving and Bicycling Simulator Laboratory. Patrick is studying the glance patterns of bicyclists as they perform left turns at intersections with different levels of traffic control (Figure 1). Makenzie is studying the influence of texting and driving on driver glance patterns and lateral position of the vehicle (Figure 2). OSU is a PacTrans member institution.
