Each seminar talk is also broadcasted over the Internet as a webinar to offer cost-effective participation from remote sites in the region. The first speaker was Dr. Laurence R. Rilett, director of the Mid-America Transportation Center at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. His presentation, entitled "Calibration of Micro-Simulation Models Using ITS Data: Lessons Learned", focused on quality improvement of simulation experiments using new datasets from the increasing deployed ITS sensors. His seminar talk delivered on November 14, 2012 was jointly sponsored by ITE Washington. On February, 27, 2013, Chris T. Hendrickson, the Duquesne Light Company University Professor and co-director of the Green Design Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, presented on "Electric Vehicles and Life Cycle Assessment." Dr. Hendrickson discussed the importance of considering the full life cycle environmental implications of widespread adoption of electric vehicles, including earlier lead acid battery versions and new battery chemistries. Robert Cervero, the Carmel P. Friesen Chair of Urban Studies and professor of city and regional planning at the University of California, Berkeley, and also the director of the Institute of Urban and Regional Development (IURD) and director of the University of California Transportation Center (UCTC), gave a talk on April 19, 2013, on the UW campus. His presentation on "Sustainable Mobility, Place-making, and Economic Competitiveness: Striking a Balance" addressed the challenges of finding an appropriate balance between transport infrastructure as an economic conduit and broader place-making and community building objectives, drawing lessons from Asian, European, and American contexts. As with the first two PacTrans Seminars, Cervero's talk was well-attended by university students, professors, and transportation professionals in the area. 2012-2013 Annual Report 5
