A fuller account views the stages of this war through the lens of Iraq's institutions and leadership, highlighting underemphasized criminal dimensions of the conflict. The consequences of the highly organized crimes of this pre-emptive war are wide ranging and will be long lasting. John Hagan is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and Law at Northwestern University, Co-Director of the Center on Law & Globalization at the American Bar Foundation in Chicago, and editor of Annual Review of Law and Social Science. He received the Stockholm Prize in Criminology in 2009, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. His research spans topics from war crimes and human rights to the legal profession. He recently co-authored Darfur and the Crime of Genocide with Wenona Rymond-Richmond. As a Guggenheim Fellow, Hagan studied the migration of American Vietnam war resisters to Canada, a study described in his book Northern Passage. Other recent work has focused on the international trial of Slobodan Milosevic. His book, Justice in the Balkans, is a social history of this tribunal. Doors open at 6:30.
