ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS The department is pleased to announce the awarding of six professorships and fellowships to Department of History faculty. Jordanna Bailkin, an award-winning historian of Britain and the British Empire, from Victorian times to the decolonization era, was appointed to the Jere L. Bacharach Professorship in International Studies, effective October 2015. Jere Bacharach earned many friends in the department during his long service as professor, chair of the History Department, and director of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. His professorship seeks to promote cutting-edge historical research in area studies, while advancing the cultural and intellectual life of the local community. Purnima Dhavan, a highly regarded expert on society and culture in Mughal-era South Asia, was appointed to the Howard and Frances Keller Endowed Professorship in History, effective October 2014. Inspired by the Kellers' insatiable love of learning, this professorship seeks to support history faculty who have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, scholarship, and historical research. Patricia Ebrey, a distinguished authority on Tang and Song dynasty China, was named the inaugural appointee to the Williams Family Endowed Professorship in History, effective January 2015. Gordon and Muriel Williams and their son Stanley were inspired by their love of history and their desire to support the department's faculty. This professorship benefits educators and researchers in any historical field. Raymond Jonas, an eminent scholar of modern Europe and European expansion, was appointed to the Colonel Donald W. Wiethuechter Endowed Faculty Fellowship in Military History, effective October 2014. Wiethuechter's gift sprang from his own love of history, and his hope that new generations of undergraduates would learn to share in it. The fellowship promotes professional development of faculty studying military history and the history of war and society. Benjamin Schmidt, an expert on the intersection of material culture and ideas in early-modern Europe, was appointed to the Giovanni and Amne Costigan Endowed Professorship in History, effective October 2015. Giovanni Costigan was a beloved public lecturer and professor of history at the university for many years. The Costigan endowment helps support teaching and research in fields outside of U.S. history. Laurie Sears, an acclaimed social and intellectual historian of the islands that now make up Indonesia, was appointed to the Walker Family Endowed Professorship of History, effective January 2015. Through their many gifts, the Walkers have sought to further the pursuit of knowledge at all levels and in all areas of the university. In keeping with that spirit, the Walker Professorship supports excellence in any field of historical scholarship.
