PACTRANS AND SOUTHERN PLAINS TRANSPORTATION CENTER HOST A TECH TRANSFER SESSION AT ASCE T&DI CONFERENCE OSU STUDENTS AT THE STUDENT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Born in the Western ITE district, the Student Leadership Summit (SLS) is an opportunity for students to organize and host a large scale event. In the process, those that attend are able to develop strong leadership skills that will lead to better careers, by listening to leaders in the transportation industry from around the region. The 3rd annual SLS was hosted by Cal Poly Pomona January 22 24, 2016. Four OSU students spent three days listening to technical presentations, engaging in mock speed interviews, learning about design projects, and ultimately participating in a design competition centered around parking on Cal Poly campus. The OSU team secured a 2nd place victory among the 12 teams present. STUDENTS VISIT TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT CENTER Each year, PacTrans endeavours to offers its students the opportunity to experience real world jobs first hand. This past year PacTrans organized a site visit to the Northwest Region Transportation Management Center in Shoreline, WA, one of the six regional Traffic Management Centers (TMCs) in the state. On December 7, 2015, twenty-three UW Transportation Engineering students spent a day learning about the complexities of running a comprehensive 24 hour-per-day, 7 days-per-week operation. The TMC is the operation center of the many Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) used to make our entire transportation system run more safely and efficiently. ITS devices include roadside cameras, ramp meters, variable message signs, speed and lane control signs, and radios. Dr. Wang shared about recent successes with our Center's development of Bluetooth and WiFi mobile sensing technology. This past June, the 26 through the 29, 2016, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) held their 2016 annual International Conference on Transportation and Development. The four-day conference, co-sponsored by PacTrans, was held in Houston, Texas, and featured dozens of great sessions ranging from rail to public transportation to innovations in pavement to system management and operations to emerging technologies. Dr. Wang had the privilege of moderating and presenting in one such session. He, along with Dr. Musharraf Zaman, professor at University of Oklahoma and director of the Southern Plains Transportation Center, hosted a session on Technology Transfer. They were joined by Waseem Fazal, of the Federal Highway Administration. Dr. Wang shared about recent successes with our Center's development of Bluetooth and WiFi mobile sensing technology. He also presented the challenges and obstacles that still stand in the way of these technologies being fully implemented to collect more robust data sets on peoples' movements. 25 2014-2015 Annual Report
