CUTC AWARDS AND PACTRANS RECEPTION AT THE 95TH ANNUAL TRB MEETING At the 2016 TRB Annual Meeting, PacTrans student and faculty researchers were in attendance from all five of our consortium institutions. In total, PacTrans researchers had over 100 papers accepted to, and presented at, the meeting; and those researchers participated in over 120 lecterns, poster sessions, workshops, committees, and subcommittees. PacTrans also hosted its annual Region 10 reception on the evening of January 11th, 2016, which brought together professionals, public officials, and students from all over the world. University of Alaska, Fairbanks, student, Anthony Mullin received the Michael Kyte Region 10 Outstanding Student Award. Finally, PacTrans associate directors and staff were present at the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) banquet, where University of Washington PhD student, John Ash, and Oregon State University graduate student, Andrea Mather, each received outstanding student of the year awards. PACTRANS-TONGJI PHD RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM This past August, PacTrans hosted a symposium co-sponsored by both PacTrans and Tongji University on the beautiful University of Washington campus. Three professor and eight PhD students from Tongji, as well as three PhD students from consortium partner university, Oregon State University, joined PacTrans director, Dr. Yinhai Wang, along with thirteen of his lab's PhD students for a wonderfully successful event. The symposium focused on PhD research in transportation science and technology. Twenty-five PhD students had the opportunity to learn about their peers' research in the areas of active traffic control, transportation data modeling, and autonomous/ connected vehicle. FIRST IEEE INTERNATIONAL SMART CITIES CONFERENCE PacTrans sponsored the First IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2-2015) in Guadalajara, Mexico on October 25th – 28th, 2015. With an overarching theme of sustainability, this conference is focused on technology and policy topics central to human-infrastructure integration and data-driven decision making. This first annual conference brought together approximately 500 individuals working in a broad range of disciplines in the public and private sector around the world, to interact and learn about current and emerging trends in smart cities and sustainable economic development. Smart transportation is the most popular track in this conference with over 30 talks in the program. PacTrans Director, Dr. Yinhai Wang attended the conference in his role as a general co-chair on the conference planning committee, and was accompanied by several University of Washington graduate students who gave presentations on their current research work, and hosted a PacTrans exhibit at the conference. 5 2014-2015 Annual Report
