Dr. Pitu Mirchandani, Professor of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), and Senior Sustainability Scientist within the Global Institute of Sustainability and the Director of Advanced Transportation and Logistics Systems (ATLAS) Research Laboratory, discussed MIDAS-CPS: The Possible Future of Proactive Traffic Management Systems. The MIDAS hopes to demonstrate the synergistic use of a cyber-physical infrastructure consisting of smart-phone type devices; cloud computing, wireless communication, and intelligent transportation systems to manage vehicles in the complex urban network – through the use of traffic controls, route advisories and road pricing/rewards – to jointly optimize drivers' mobility as well as achieve the sustainability goals of reducing energy usage and improving air quality. Wayne Kittelson, Wayne is the Founding Principal of Kittelson & Associates, Inc. and offers over 35 years of both national and international experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering, highway design, public involvement, and transportation research. He serves in various leadership roles for the Transportation Research Board and is an invited member of a policy-level advisory panel for the Federal Highway Administration. He regularly teaches transportation related courses at universities around the nation and also within training programs sponsored by a number of state DOTs. Dr. James Tsai, Dr. James Tsai is a Professor of School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech. Dr. Tsai's research focuses on the development of spatial information and sensing optimization (SISO) methodologies, using 2D imaging, 3D lasers, 3D LiDAR, UAV, and smart phones, and GPS/GIS technologies with artificial intelligence and pattern recognition, concentrating on applications to roadway infrastructure asset health condition evaluation, preservation and management, and roadway safety. Dr. Terry Friesz, Terry L. Friesz is the Harold and Inge Marcus Chaired Professor of Industrial Engineering at Penn State, where he also Director of the Center for Service Enterprise Engineering. He has previously been a faculty member at MIT, George Mason University, and the University of Pennsylvania, where he held the UPS Foundation Chair in Transportation. Dr. Daniel Sterling, Konstantinos (Kostas) Triantis is currently the John Lawrence Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Center. Dr. Triantis research has focused on performance measurement and evaluation, fuzzy methods for data envelopment analysis, dynamic efficiency analysis, and affordability engineering, and has included research on the performance evaluation of civil infrastructure systems, as well as social service and manufacturing enterprises. Lenor Bromberg (Leadership in Transportation Seminar), Ms. Bromberg is City Engineer in the Community Development Department of the City of Roswell, Georgia. She manages the Engineering Division, which is responsible for overseeing land development and tree removal activities within the City of Roswell, including application and plan reviews, and site inspections. With over 20 years of planning and engineering experience, Ms. Bromberg has unique expertise in the development of projects from conceptual planning through design and construction observation. She is a registered professional engineer, an Associate Value Specialist, and a LEED Accredited Professional PACTRANS SEMINAR SERIES PacTrans continued its regional seminar series to help generate discussions of ongoing and future research and foster an exchange of information between transportation professionals and researchers. Each PacTrans regional seminar talk is broadcasted over the internet as a webinar to offer cost-effective participation from remote sites in the region. 27 2014-2015 Annual Report
