PACTRANS HOSTS TECH WORKSHOP WITH DIDI PACTRANS SHOWCASES RESEARCH AT ITS WASHINGTON CONFERENCE This year's annual ITS Washington Conference was co- sponsored by PacTrans, which also had the opportunity to host a breakout session showcasing some of the great ITS research it has been involved in. The conference featured presentations on Urban Traffic Modeling with Mobile Sensing research, Testing Unmanned Aircraft for Avalanche Monitoring in Difficult Conditions, Private Shuttles and Public Transportation: Effect of Shared Transit Stops on Travel Time and Reliability in Seattle, and Applications and Case Studies of Mobile Sensing for Multi-Model Traffic. Early this year, DiDi, a Chinese ride-sharing service, reached out to PacTrans director Dr. Yinhai Wang, wanting to meet and discuss with university researchers harboring a broad range of knowledge on topics prevalent in the transportation sector. On January 16, 2018, PacTrans hosted a technology and research scan, featuring a discussion on a variety of items from artificial intelligence to current trends in ride sharing and data driven transportation. Those in attendance included the Vice President of DiDi, Jieping Ye, and a group from Zhuhai Innovation Center, along with several UW faculty members and student researchers. Ye was enthusiastic with the idea of collaborating with researchers and agencies, and took a liking to implementing their data resources in order to address current issues in transportation planning and management. He also expressed great interest in recruiting UW graduate students, who were invited to discuss potential employment opportunities with DiDi. UW professors and researchers were given the chance to present their own research on a variety of emerging topics in transportation, including pricing and rider/driver matching for sustainable ride sharing, mobile sensing for urban traffic monitoring, and data driven smart transportation solutions. PACTRANS RECEPTION AT 2018 TRB ANNUAL MEETING Over 200 participants gathered at the 2018 TRB Annual Meeting last January in Washington D.C. to discuss potential partnerships in and around the PNW. With the support of PacTrans, 60 students from consortium universities were able to attend the meeting and presented their papers, further explored research opportunities, and networked outside their respective universities. Oregon State University PhD student, Alireza Mostafizi, was awarded the Michael Kyte Region X Outstanding Student of the Year Award, which recognizes students who have proven to have superior abilities and shown great effort in the areas of technical merit and research, academic performance, and professionalism and leadership. The award was presented by PacTrans Director, Prof. Yinhai Wang (UW) and PacTrans Associate Director, Prof. David Hurwitz (OSU). 5 2018 Annual Report
