PacTrans Welcomes New Faculty U W David Shean The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington welcomes David Shean as an assistant professor. His current research uses satellite, airborne, UAV, and terrestrial remote sensing observations to understand the Earth's cryosphere. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Brown University and his Ph.D. in Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington. O S U Barbara Simpson The School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University's College of Engineering welcomes Barbara Simpson as an assistant professor of structural engineering. She arrives at Oregon State after completing her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in structural engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. She holds a B.S. degree in architectural engineering from The University of Kansas. In her research, Simpson uses advanced computational and experimental methods to characterize structural response and improve building performance. Meagan Wengrove The School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University's College of Engineering welcomes Meagan Wengrove as assistant professor of coastal and ocean engineering. She joins Oregon State after completing Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degrees at the University of New Hampshire. In her research, Wengrove investigates sediment transport process physics and nature-based shoreland buffers for resilient coastal engineering solutions. She received a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Defense and conducted research on water management issues in the Netherlands as a Fulbright Graduate Student Scholar. U I Mohamed Hefeida Mohamed Hefeida is a clinical assistant professor with the ECE department at the University of Idaho. He received his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2013, where he also worked as a visiting assistant professor for one year. Before joining the ECE department at the University of Idaho, Dr. Hefeida was an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the American University of the Middle East in Kuwait, where he also served as an interim chair of the computer engineering department. His research interests span a wide spectrum of networking and communication techniques, with particular interest in Wireless Sensor Networks, Internet of Things (IoT), Cross-Layer Design, and Data Management. W S U Courtney Gardner, Assistant Professor Courtney Gardner's research interests include microbiome engineering, transgenic crops, plant-microbe interactions, rhizosphere communities, antibiotic resistance in soil and wastewater treatment plants, and the impacts of anthropogenic chemicals on water and soil microorganisms. She holds a bachelor of science from Stetson University and a master's and doctorate from Duke University. She held a postdoctoral position at Duke before coming to WSU. Sasha Richey, Assistant Professor Sasha Richey's research interests include identifying and quantifying the interaction between human and physical systems, with a focus on groundwater and large scale hydrologic systems. Her research combines satellite and in-situ observations of hydrologic systems into modeling and decision support frameworks over large regional scales, including in the Columbia Plateau Aquifer in the Pacific Northwest (United States) and in Central Asia. She focuses on complex groundwater systems where interdisciplinary approaches are necessary to understand both natural and anthropogenic drivers of aquifer change. Richey holds a bachelor of science degree from Stanford University and a master of science and doctorate degrees from University of California, Irvine. Before joining WSU, she served as a consultant for the World Bank. 7 2017 – 2018 Annual Report
