Speculation Theater is a podcast created by graduate students
Jorge Bayona and Kirk Sharma. Its mission is to engage with the
issue of contingency in history.
Some of the key events that have shaped our world took
place as a result of happenstance, or could have just as easily
gone another way. Speculation Theater seeks to raise popular
awareness of the role of contingency in determining historical
events, and to explore some of its consequences.
In each episode of the podcast, Kirk and Jorge interview a
member of the UW History community. Together they consider
the paths not taken, and the present-day effects that various
historical alternatives might have produced.

History Goes Digital
In the 21st century, digital technologies have rapidly become a crucial tool for the study of history.
Here are just two of the many projects in the department that are pushing the boundaries of digital history.
The Seattle Civil Rights & Labor History Project is an award-
winning collaborative digital project founded by UW History
professor James Gregory and UW History alumnus Trevor
Griffey. It seeks to present documents and analysis related to
local social activism to a broad audience of educators, writers,
policy-makers, and concerned citizens.
Graduate student Kevin McKenna is working to create the
next chapter in this expansive historical archive—a brand
new section devoted to LGBTQ activism. The content will
include historical essays, a timeline, links to digital photos
and documents held by UW Libraries, and video interviews
conducted with LGBTQ activists. This new section of the site
will officially launch in fall 2016.
